Honing Your Coaching Skillset

Getting ready today to deliver a favourite Leadership Capability Development topic:
Coaching & Mentoring.

We’re going to be exploring the actual skillset of how to coach and/ or mentor. How to know what’s needed when and where, the questions to ask, how to dig deeper, or get someone ‘out of the weeds’.

There is a lot of nuance to being a great leader who can coach well when required. It’s an effective and important capability to refine, improve or develop, depending on current skill level.

One of the key elements to coaching well is to use open-ended questions to get an individual or team to ‘think’ for themselves. Sometimes either individual or team can develop a tendency to wait to be ‘told’ what to do, or expect answers, or have problems solved for them.

Which if this goes on over a period of time, breeds complacency, disinterest or low motivation, because leadership might be ‘inadvertently’ over-functioning with micro-management, extremely high expectations, people-pleasing or perfectionism to name a few areas.

As leaders with coaching tools in our belt, we’re going to be asking great questions to encourage self-awareness, connection, decision-making & confidence, next steps, ideas and collaboration.

Open-ended questions – leaves the door – open!

Closed questions – will get one-word answers, limited response, low engagement and input.

What are your favourite open-ended questions to ask of your team members?
