This morning this very phrase was top of mind and frequently used when brainstorming with a client. “If not now, when?” It can be a powerful motivator for decision-making and taking action. In the face of business difficulties and issues that are impacting the tourism industry, it can be tempting to wait and see how things develop before taking action. However, this approach can often lead to missed opportunities and a failure to address critical problems in a timely manner.
One of the biggest challenges facing the tourism industry in Australia at the moment is the shortage of staff, particularly in regional areas where accommodation is also often limited. This can make it difficult for businesses to operate at full capacity, which in turn impacts profitability and the ability to provide a quality experience for visitors.
To overcome these challenges, tourism business owners and leaders need to be proactive and take decisive action. Any level of hesitation or even extreme procrastination can and will lead to significant ramifications. Decisive action may involve investing in staff training and development programs, offering incentives to attract and retain staff, and working with local governments to address the issue of staff accommodation.
Or it could be addressing the business’s internal and external reputation, recruiting strategies, and hiring processes that may be hindering access to, and attractiveness for potential candidates locally and from further afield.
In addition to staff shortages, there’s also a lack of leadership capability and staff skill sets in certain industry sectors, which can make it difficult for businesses to adapt to changing market conditions and manage and understand current consumer preferences and behaviors. To address this, business owners and tourism leaders may need to invest in training programs for themselves and their staff to ensure they stay up-to-date, relevant, and ahead of the curve. Likewise embracing opportunities to collaborate with other tourism businesses to share expertise and resources can be highly advantageous for making the most out of what is undoubtedly a challenging situation for tourism businesses across the globe.
Another challenge facing the tourism industry in Australia remains the sluggish return of key international markets. Whilst there are many factors contributing to this, including flight capacity and consumer reluctance to travel abroad yet, it is important for businesses to be proactive in their approach to attracting visitors. Vigilance in addressing all aspects of attracting, converting, and delivering to visitors is imperative as addressing the critical elements of the customer journey and lifecycle to encourage returning domestic visitation, while international remains slow. It may also be important to consider developing new marketing campaigns – instead of old, tried and tested, offering incentives to both domestic and/or international visitors, and working with supportive industry associations and government bodies to address the specific challenges facing individual tourism operators, a region, state or country.
Ultimately, the key to overcoming the challenges facing the tourism industry in Australia is to be proactive and take decisive action.
By embracing the philosophy of “if not now, when,” business owners and leaders can drive positive change and ensure that their businesses are well-positioned to succeed in the constantly challenging and ever-changing tourism market.
