Getting the Best out of Your Goal Setting

The divide in the room was fascinating. Half the room wanted to work on 12-month goals, a few were able to look at 3 and 5-year goals, and the rest were barely able to think about tomorrow, let alone in 3 months time.

Goal setting is a very personal thing, yet when required to do it in a professional environment, it can really bring out the best and the challenge for some.

What’s key is the ability to press pause on the day-to-day, to remove all assumptions, and be present in the here and now.

Only then can one or anyone truly get into a great goal-setting brain space?

Usually, facilitation might begin with throwing numbers around, a spreadsheet or two, and the big question – right what do you want to achieve in 1, 3, or 5 years?

However, we approached it very differently last week at our goal-setting event with 13 in the room, because I believe no goal has meaning without it being specifically tied to a purpose, mission, vision, or values. And what those are, is going to be quite unique to you, your life, and your business or role in business.

Why is the goal important to achieve?

What will it mean for the individual, the team, or the business?

We also believe wholeheartedly in the importance of holistic goal-setting. That means we cover the personal stuff as well as the professional.

There is no point in running a business if it is to the detriment of family and health. Likewise, no point in setting unrealistic goals for health and family if the business or role is unable to flex and support either.

So they go hand-in-hand – in unison.

We like to look at the whole wheel of life to understand financial goals, spiritual goals, contribution goals, growth goals, well-being, fun, and reaction. And so much more.

When was the last time you took a good look at your goals?

Why they’re important and what do you want to achieve in the next 3 months, 1 year, 3 years, and even perhaps 5 years?

Would you like a hand with setting goals, personally, professionally, and for the business?
