Leadership Challenges

Today want to share a really personal experience supporting a young leader through a challenging period. It’s in-house, at home and it was a challenging time.

This young man is Henry. He’s just turned 13.

Last cricket season he captained the U11’s to win in the 2nd Division of Manly Warringah Rep cricket. It was a big year for him, he bowled well, batted ok and captained like a champion. He is able to read the game, see the holes, is a very strategic thinker when it comes to game strategy, position his players well, whether fielding or batting. It was fascinating to watch. Yes, I’m learning to love cricket!

This season he wasn’t captain, he had a broken finger for the beginning of the season and the balls just weren’t going his way.

It’s sometimes tough watching those in our world, so committed and passionate, but things aren’t working well for them.

The captaincy was handed over very fairly to give other kids the chance to learn to captain as well. His finger healed and the balls started to land. He got a new bat for his birthday recently and scored a 35 runs on the first outing, then a 49 and 84 not out on a consecutive sat/sun the following weekend. He was back!

Sometimes the balls just don’t go our way. We’re challenged with decisions made by senior management. We have to keep turning up, smiling and giving it our best.

This is one proud mumma. The run scoring was seriously amazing.

Even more proud because of his attitude.

Attitude is everything. Sometimes we might be in an influencer role and sit on the sidelines whilst others make decisions that we have to agree to and go along with. Other times we might be in that decision-making role and these decisions have consequences, a flow on effect.

How resilient, committed and passionate are you? And the team you’re leading and influencing.
