Leadership Lessons from Ash Barty

Did you notice how many times Ash Barty talked about her team after her Wimbledon win? Several times. She’s an extraordinary role model not only in the sporting world, we can learn a lot about her successes and apply them into the business world.

One of the most interesting facts that has come to light from her work with her mindset coach – Ben Crowe, was that up until recently, she’d never dared to speak her dreams aloud. Not the big juicy stuff like going after this most recent achievement. Speaking these goals out aloud and then having a plan to make them happen is key to actually making dreams happen.

We all have the ability to dream, to then maybe talk about doing stuff, however not everyone actually them makes their dreams a reality.

What I love most about Ash Barty is, it’s never just about her. She is always about her team. The teamwork and the journey together.

And what a PRO-TEAM she has around her!

To be able to do the unthinkable with a hip injury that would normally have taken 2 months to heal. They’ve turned the situation around in weeks. That took a lot of teamwork, because it would have been very easy for any one of the team including Ash to use the ‘No… it’s impossible’. To then plant seeds of doubt, and or not do the work required, to have the commitment and follow-through from everyone on the team.

And it took everyone, from head coach, to physio, to boyfriend, everyone had to be on the Wimbledon journey.

Do you have everyone on the journey on your team?

Or do you have some with one foot on the bus and one foot off?

Are you seeing that go above and beyond attitude to make things happen or can you sense your team members are really not fully with you.

Recognising that it could be for a multitude of reasons, if they’re not.

It’s important to ensure we’re not using judgement of an individual or situations, instead discernment and a deep understanding for what’s truly going on. This is where I see the make or break happen with many teams. There are so many high expectations, little clarity around the vision and the plan, judgement abounds and a lack of deep understanding of human behaviour and what’s needed most.

Let’s enjoy Barty’s win and learn from the experience.

What other key qualities do you admire in Ash? Her humility and fierce desire to play her game, stand out the most for me. In fact Pliskova’s Ace showcasing her grit that kept her in the game at a crucial time and then Barty’s Ace in that final game was an absolutely testament to their skill, both mental and physical! Congratulations Ash Barty and to your entire team. What a win!
